Calling All Doers- We Did It!
Thanks to your outstanding generosity, we blasted past our fundraising goals for We Are SXU Day 2022! We thank you for helping to make We Are SXU Day such an outstanding success!
We cannot wait to do it again next year!
Last year, Saint Xavier marked 175 years of educational excellence. This year, we celebrate the 200th birthday of Mother Agatha O’Brien, the first Superior of the Sisters of Mercy in Chicago and Saint Xavier's first Directress - or - President.
Deemed ‘capable of ruling a nation,’ Mother O’Brien was the first woman to be received as a novice of the Sisters of Mercy in the United States. Shortly after her final vows, she went to Chicago with Mother Frances Xavier Warde and four other Sisters, arriving in September 1846 and founding what would become Saint Xavier University three weeks later. Mother Agatha O'Brien went on to help establish Mercy Hospital, several schools and orphanages and welcomed many new Sisters into the order through her work in Chicago.
Mother O’Brien is the premier example of a Saint Xavier ‘doer,’ an individual who answered the call to extend the wonder and promise of Mercy far and wide. Her legacy in Chicago is remarkable, and her works are responsible for the education of thousands of students across the globe.
Saint Xavier honors the legacy of Mother O’Brien this year during our We Are SXU Day of Giving and Celebration. Our alumni and friends are invited to answer the call while supporting the students we cultivate to carry out her legacy through meaningful lives and successful careers.
